A manhunt is underway for five suspects who escaped from Wundanyi Main Prisons in Taita Taveta County.
The escape occurred on Saturday night when eight remand prisoners managed to flee the facility by cutting through the roof of their cell.
By Sunday, three of the suspects were recaptured in the Godoma area of Mwatate Subcounty and have since been transferred to the Manyani Maximum Security Prison in Voi.
However, five others are still on the run, and authorities are intensifying efforts to bring them back into custody.
Patrick Aranduh, the Commissioner General of Prisons, has dispatched a team from Nairobi to investigate how the escape took place.
The team is particularly looking into the actions of the prison officers on duty at the time.
Coast Regional Police Boss George Sedah confirmed that five suspects remain at large and urged the public to stay alert.
"These are deemed dangerous suspects. We appeal to locals to help us recapture them," Sedah said.
The escape occurred when the prisoners used tools to cut through the iron sheets of the roof and slipped away unnoticed.
The escape was discovered hours later when the routine check by prison officers revealed the breach.
The suspects, who were awaiting trial for various crimes, managed to escape with no immediate alarms raised. Authorities from both the police and the prison department have been questioning those on duty that night to understand how the break occurred.
Officials have alerted local authorities in the areas where the suspects are believed to come from, and police continue to conduct operations to track down the remaining fugitives.
